How can I effectively develop item knowledge to keep my group moving?
My goals for the end of term 2 were:
- Remainder of letters and sounds known
- 25 basic sight words (mid term 3)
Here are the updated results for my inquiry group:
Makalita - 38 letters and 10 words (started school on 19/5/14 with 10 letters and 0 words)
Xaviar - 46 letters and 9 words (started school on 6/5/14 with 3 letters and 0 words)
Lester - all letters and 11 words (started school on 27/5/14 with 28 letters and 0 words)
Joelina - 39 letters and 13 words (started school on 3/6/14 with 22 letters and 0 words)
All the kids in my inquiry group have made progress and are on their way to meeting the mid term 3 goal. They have not all met the goal of all letters known by the end of term 2 so that shows me gaps in item knowledge to focus on at the beginning of term 3.
---------------------------------------------------
Fiona (teacher in room 2) gave me some notes from a Jill Eggleton 'Linking the Language' session from a few years back and I found some helpful information regarding my inquiry.
I liked these two quotes:
- "Oral language is the key to writing - to write it you must be able to say it"
- Provide opportunities
- topics need to be of interest
- "Plan your work then work your plan"
There is definitely evidence of this looking at my planning, it is constantly scribbled over as needs change, or students move on or back.
Reading
- Aim to establish a balanced reading programme - reading with, to and by daily
- Children are exposed to a range of written text
- Create a love of reading
- Show enthusiasm
Emergent 1 - fiction, high frequency words, thinking about text
Emergent 2 - fiction and non fiction, high frequency words, thinking about the text, print conventions, phonological patterns
Independent Reading
All children need independent book boxes containing 8-10 titles previously introduced (for emergent / red). They need to read from these boxes every day and change some books each week.
